Rall

Summary
Donovan Rall operates Rall Wines as a small-scale, independent producer in South Africa's Western Cape, crafting limited-production white and red blends from carefully selected old-vine parcels in Swartland, Stellenbosch, and Darling regions where dry-farmed bush vines grow at 300-500 meters in diverse soils. His minimal-intervention winemaking philosophy emphasizes natural fermentation and vineyard expression, establishing him as a standard-bearer for South Africa's new wave of quality-focused producers who balance old-world sensibilities with the country's distinctive terroir.
Heritage & Leadership
Rall Wines was established in 2008 by winemaker Donovan Rall in the Western Cape of South Africa. After graduating with a degree in viticulture and oenology, Donovan gained experience working harvests across Europe, including time in Priorat, Spain, and various regions in France and Germany. Upon returning to South Africa, he worked with local producers before launching his own label.
The winery operates as a small, independent producer focused on crafting wines from specific vineyard sites across the Western Cape. Donovan maintains direct control over all aspects of production, from vineyard selection to bottling, working as both proprietor and winemaker. The operation remains intentionally small-scale, allowing for hands-on management of each wine in the portfolio.
Vineyards & Wines
Rall Wines does not own vineyards but instead sources fruit from carefully selected sites throughout the Western Cape, with particular focus on the Swartland, Stellenbosch, and Darling regions. Donovan works with growers who maintain old vine parcels, many planted between the 1960s and 1980s.
The portfolio includes both single-varietal wines and blends. The flagship Rall White is a blend of Chenin Blanc and Verdelho from multiple sites, while the Rall Red combines Syrah and Grenache. The range has expanded to include single-vineyard expressions such as Ava Syrah from Swartland and the Cinsault Blanc, made from a rare white mutation of the red Cinsault grape. Additional bottlings include varietal Grenache Blanc and a Chenin Blanc from specific vineyard sites.
The vineyards Donovan works with are primarily dry-farmed bush vines grown in diverse soils including decomposed granite, schist, and iron-rich clay. Many sites sit at elevations between 300-500 meters above sea level, contributing to the distinctive character of the wines.
Philosophy & Practice
Donovan Rall's approach centers on minimal intervention winemaking that emphasizes vineyard expression over cellar manipulation. Harvesting is conducted by hand, with grapes sorted in the vineyard before transport to the winery. White varieties undergo whole-bunch pressing, while red grapes see varying percentages of whole-cluster fermentation depending on the vintage and variety.
Fermentation occurs naturally with indigenous yeasts in a combination of concrete eggs, old oak barrels, and stainless steel tanks. The wines typically mature for 10-12 months before bottling without fining and with minimal filtration. Annual production remains limited to approximately 30,000 bottles across all wines, allowing for attention to detail throughout the process.
Rall's winemaking philosophy focuses on picking at optimal ripeness to maintain natural acidity while achieving phenolic maturity. This approach results in wines with moderate alcohol levels and structural balance. The production facility, located in the Swartland region, utilizes gravity flow principles where possible to minimize harsh mechanical handling of the wine.
