Joseph Phelps

Summary
Joseph Phelps is a family-owned Napa Valley producer with 100 acres in St. Helena and additional vineyards across Napa and Sonoma Coast, specializing in Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-style blends. Their winemaking philosophy centers on their pioneering proprietary blend Insignia, sustainable farming practices, and exclusive use of estate-grown fruit from diverse terroirs.
Heritage & Leadership
Joseph Phelps established his namesake winery in 1973 after purchasing a 600-acre former cattle ranch in St. Helena, Napa Valley. The construction of the winery began immediately, completing in time for the 1974 harvest. That same year, Phelps created Insignia, California's first proprietary Bordeaux-style blend, marking a significant innovation in American winemaking. The winery remained under Joseph Phelps's direct leadership until 2005, when it transitioned to the next generation of the Phelps family. In 2016, ownership formally transferred to a family trust, maintaining the operation's independence. Today, Elizabeth Phelps-Neuman, Joseph's daughter, serves as President, continuing the family's hands-on involvement in daily operations.
Vineyards & Wines
Joseph Phelps Vineyards manages 425 acres of estate vineyards across Napa Valley's premier growing regions. The Home Ranch vineyard in St. Helena encompasses 130 acres of vines planted on gentle slopes at elevations between 200-300 feet. In the Stags Leap District, the Las Rocas and Barboza vineyards cover 100 acres, distinguished by their volcanic soils. The Suscol Ranch in southern Napa Valley comprises 150 acres, while the Backus Vineyard in Oakville maintains 45 acres of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Since 2009, all Joseph Phelps wines have been produced exclusively from estate-grown fruit.
Philosophy & Practice
The winery's production methods combine traditional techniques with modern precision. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and open-top fermenters, allowing for careful extraction management. The aging program utilizes French oak barrels, with specific durations and new oak percentages tailored to each wine and vintage. Joseph Phelps holds California Certified Sustainable Winegrowing certification, implementing verified sustainable practices across all vineyard sites and winery operations. The winemaking approach emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing each vineyard site to express its distinct characteristics through careful viticulture and precise timing of harvest decisions.
