Bien Nacido

Summary
Bien Nacido is a family-owned 900-acre estate vineyard in California's Santa Maria Valley, established in 1973, where approximately 300 acres produce primarily Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from sandy loam and marine sediment soils in a cool maritime climate. The vineyard maintains both its own estate label and supplies over 40 prestigious wineries, with the Bien Nacido Vineyard designation becoming one of America's most recognized vineyard appellations while maintaining SIP certification for sustainable practices.
Heritage & Leadership
Bien Nacido Vineyard was established in 1973 when brothers Bob and Steve Miller planted the first vines on the historic Ontiveros Adobe property in the Santa Maria Valley of Santa Barbara County. The Millers, who came from a multi-generational California farming family, purchased the property in 1969 and transformed what was primarily a dairy and grain operation into what would become one of California's most significant vineyard properties. The vineyard's name, "Bien Nacido," translates to "well born" in Spanish, honoring the property's Spanish land grant history.
The Miller family maintains ownership of Bien Nacido to this day, with the second generation now actively involved in operations. Nicholas Miller serves as Vice President of Sales and Marketing, while Marshall Miller oversees vineyard operations as Vice President of Operations. The family's agricultural expertise extends beyond wine grapes, as they also manage extensive row crop operations throughout California's Central Coast.
The initial plantings in 1973 focused primarily on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. By the early 1980s, Bien Nacido had established itself as a premier source of grapes for numerous California wineries. In 2007, the Miller family launched their own estate wine program under the Bien Nacido Estate label, allowing them to showcase wines produced exclusively from their vineyard.
Vineyards & Wines
Bien Nacido Vineyard encompasses approximately 900 acres in the Santa Maria Valley AVA, with roughly 300 acres under vine. The vineyard sits on a bench that rises from the valley floor to the foothills of the Solomon Hills, ranging in elevation from 400 to 800 feet above sea level. This location benefits from the region's unique east-west transverse mountain range orientation, which funnels cool Pacific Ocean air into the valley.
The vineyard's soil composition varies across the property but predominantly features sandy loam, calcareous shale, and marine sediments. These well-draining soils, combined with the cool climate, create conditions that extend the growing season and allow for slow, even ripening of the grapes.
Bien Nacido is planted to multiple grape varieties, with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay comprising the majority of the acreage. Additional plantings include Syrah, Merlot, Grenache, Viognier, and small blocks of other varieties. The vineyard is divided into distinct blocks, many of which have gained individual recognition, such as the "Z Block" Syrah and "W Block" Pinot Noir. Some of the original Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines planted in the 1970s remain in production today.
While Bien Nacido sells grapes to numerous prestigious wineries throughout California, their estate program produces several wines, including single-vineyard Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. The vineyard designation "Bien Nacido Vineyard" appears on bottles from more than 40 different producers, making it one of the most recognized vineyard sources in American wine.
Philosophy & Practice
The Miller family's approach to vineyard management at Bien Nacido emphasizes site expression and sustainable farming practices. Their vineyard team employs precision viticulture techniques, including detailed block-by-block management that accounts for the property's varied microclimates, soil types, and exposures.
Bien Nacido's farming practices incorporate sustainable methods such as cover cropping, integrated pest management, and water conservation. The vineyard received SIP (Sustainability in Practice) certification in 2011, verifying their commitment to environmental stewardship, social equity, and economic viability.
For their estate wines, Bien Nacido employs traditional winemaking techniques that aim to showcase the vineyard's distinctive character. Chardonnay undergoes whole-cluster pressing followed by fermentation and aging in French oak barrels with varying percentages of new oak. Pinot Noir fermentation typically includes a percentage of whole clusters, with gentle extraction methods and aging in French oak. Their Syrah often incorporates higher percentages of whole clusters during fermentation, contributing to the wine's structural and aromatic complexity.
The Miller family maintains a collaborative approach with the wineries that purchase their grapes, working closely with winemakers to achieve specific quality objectives for each block. This partnership-based philosophy has helped establish Bien Nacido's reputation as a premier vineyard source while allowing the site's distinctive characteristics to be interpreted through multiple winemaking perspectives.
