Fratelli Alessandria

Summary
Fratelli Alessandria is a fourth-generation family estate in Verduno managing 14 hectares of prime Barolo vineyards, including parcels in Monvigliero and San Lorenzo crus at 200-350 meters elevation. Their traditional winemaking combines temperature-controlled fermentation, extended macerations and aging in Slavonian oak botti, while maintaining a dedicated focus on preserving local varieties like Pelaverga.
Heritage & Leadership
Fratelli Alessandria's roots in Verduno date to 1870, when the family established their winery in this historic Barolo commune. Today, the fourth generation maintains operations under the leadership of Vittore Alessandria, continuing a legacy of hands-on family management that spans approximately 150 years in the same location. The winery's headquarters occupy a traditional Piedmontese building in the heart of Verduno village.
Vineyards & Wines
The estate encompasses 14 hectares of vineyards, with significant holdings in the Monvigliero and San Lorenzo crus of Verduno. These sites, positioned at elevations between 200-350 meters, feature the calcareous-clay soils typical of prime Barolo territory. While Nebbiolo forms the backbone of production, the estate also cultivates Barbera and maintains some of the region's most important plantings of the indigenous Pelaverga variety, a specialty of Verduno. The vineyards occupy primarily south and southeast-facing slopes, maximizing exposure in this cool northern sector of the Barolo zone.
Philosophy & Practice
Fratelli Alessandria adheres to traditional vinification methods, carrying out fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Their Barolo undergoes extended maceration, followed by aging in large Slavonian oak botti - a classic approach aimed at preserving site expression. The winery has earned particular recognition for their work with Pelaverga, helping preserve this rare local variety through dedicated bottlings. Each vineyard parcel receives specific handling based on its characteristics and variety.
