Saintayme

Summary
Saintayme is a boutique 7-hectare Saint-Émilion Grand Cru estate in Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse, now run by the Durantou sisters, focusing exclusively on Merlot cultivation in clay-limestone soils with vines averaging 35 years of age. The estate employs hand-harvesting and minimal intervention winemaking with concrete fermentation and moderate oak aging, delivering authentic terroir-driven wines that offer exceptional quality without the fame or price tags of more celebrated Saint-Émilion properties.
Heritage & Leadership
Saintayme is a Saint-Émilion wine created by the late Denis Durantou, who acquired this property in the early 2000s. Durantou, better known as the proprietor of the acclaimed Château L'Église Clinet in Pomerol, added Saintayme to his portfolio as part of his expansion into Saint-Émilion. Following Denis Durantou's passing in May 2020, the management of Saintayme transferred to his daughters, Noëmie and Constance Durantou, who continue their father's winemaking legacy across his properties. The estate operates under the technical direction of Olivier Gautrat, who worked closely with Denis Durantou for many years and maintains continuity in the winemaking approach.
Vineyards & Wines
Saintayme's vineyards span approximately 7 hectares in the commune of Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse, located in the eastern part of the Saint-Émilion appellation. The vineyard is planted exclusively to Merlot, reflecting the grape's affinity for the property's predominantly clay-limestone soils. This terroir, typical of Saint-Émilion's eastern reaches, provides excellent water regulation and mineral components that contribute to the wine's structure and aromatic profile. The vines average 35 years in age, with some older parcels contributing depth and concentration to the final blend. The vineyard sits at a modest elevation typical of the Saint-Émilion plateau, with gentle slopes that provide natural drainage.
Philosophy & Practice
The winemaking philosophy at Saintayme follows Denis Durantou's commitment to expressing terroir through minimal intervention. Harvesting is conducted by hand, with careful sorting both in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled concrete vats, allowing for gentle extraction of color and tannins. The wine typically ages for 12-14 months in French oak barrels, with approximately 30% new oak, striking a balance that respects the fruit character while adding subtle complexity. The Durantou approach emphasizes precision in every aspect of production, from vineyard management through bottling, resulting in a wine that consistently delivers the pure expression of its Saint-Émilion origins. Saintayme represents the Durantou family's dedication to producing accessible wines that maintain high quality standards and reflect their specific terroir.
