Phelan Segur, Chateau

Summary
Château Phélan Ségur operates a 70-hectare estate in Saint-Estèphe on Bordeaux's Left Bank, producing structured Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wines from gravelly soils with clay-rich subsoils near the temperature-moderating Gironde estuary. The estate maintains traditional Bordeaux winemaking methods with hand-harvesting, parcel-specific vinification in temperature-controlled vats, and 18-month aging in French oak barrels while practicing sustainable viticulture that emphasizes biodiversity and minimal intervention.
Heritage & Leadership
Château Phélan-Ségur traces its origins to the late 18th century when Bernard Phelan, an Irish wine merchant, established the estate in Saint-Estèphe. The property was formed through the combination of two estates: Clos de Garamey and Ségur de Cabanac. Following Bernard's death in 1841, his son Frank continued developing the property, giving it its current name of Phélan-Ségur. The château remained in the Phelan family until 1985 when it was acquired by Xavier Gardinier.
The Gardinier family, led by Xavier and later his sons Thierry, Stéphane, and Laurent, owned and managed the estate for over three decades. Their tenure saw significant investments in vineyard management and winemaking facilities. In 2018, a major ownership change occurred when Belgian businessman Philippe Van de Vyvere, founder of Sea-Invest, purchased the property. Véronique Dausse has served as the Managing Director since 2010, providing continuity through the ownership transition. Though not included in the 1855 Classification, Phélan-Ségur has established itself as one of the leading properties in Saint-Estèphe.
Vineyards & Wines
Château Phélan-Ségur's vineyards span 70 hectares in the Saint-Estèphe appellation on Bordeaux's Left Bank. The estate benefits from a prime location with several parcels situated near the Gironde estuary, which provides a moderating influence on temperatures. The vineyard is planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon (58%) and Merlot (39%), complemented by small amounts of Cabernet Franc (1.5%) and Petit Verdot (1.5%).
The terroir features the classic gravelly soils of the Médoc, with varying proportions of clay in the subsoil that are characteristic of Saint-Estèphe. This soil composition provides good drainage while retaining sufficient moisture during dry periods, creating favorable conditions for the vines. The average age of the vines is 35 years, with some older parcels contributing depth and complexity to the wines. The estate produces approximately 300,000 bottles annually of its grand vin, Château Phélan-Ségur, and a second wine called Frank Phelan, named in tribute to the founder's son.
Philosophy & Practice
At Château Phélan-Ségur, the winemaking philosophy centers on expressing the distinctive character of the Saint-Estèphe terroir while maintaining a balance between power and elegance. Harvesting is conducted by hand, with grapes sorted twice—once in the vineyard and again at the winery—to ensure only the highest quality fruit enters the fermentation process.
The estate employs temperature-controlled stainless steel vats of varying sizes, allowing for precise vinification of individual vineyard parcels. Malolactic fermentation occurs in vats before the wine is transferred to French oak barrels, where it ages for approximately 18 months. The barrel program typically uses 50% new oak, striking a balance that allows the fruit character to remain prominent while gaining complexity from oak aging.
Under the current ownership and management, Phélan-Ségur has continued to refine its approach, investing in precision viticulture techniques and modernizing the winery facilities while respecting traditional Bordeaux winemaking methods. The estate practices sustainable viticulture, focusing on biodiversity within the vineyards and minimizing interventions to allow for authentic expression of the terroir.
