Louis-Benjamin Dagueneau, Domaine

Summary
Domaine Louis-Benjamin Dagueneau operates 12 hectares of vineyards in Pouilly-Fumé and a small holding in Sancerre, crafting terroir-specific Sauvignon Blanc expressions from diverse soils including the flint-rich Silex, limestone-clay Pur Sang, and sandy-limestone Buisson Renard. The family estate, now led by Didier's son Louis-Benjamin and daughter Charlotte, distinguishes itself through severe yield restriction, meticulous hand-harvesting, extended oak aging on lees for 12-18 months, and minimal intervention techniques that produce wines of remarkable depth, longevity, and terroir transparency.
Heritage & Leadership
Domaine Didier Dagueneau was established in the 1980s in Saint-Andelain, a commune within the Pouilly-Fumé appellation of France's Loire Valley. Following the untimely death of founder Didier Dagueneau in a plane crash in September 2008, leadership transitioned to his son, Louis-Benjamin Dagueneau, who was 26 years old at the time. Louis-Benjamin had been working alongside his father since 2006, preparing for an eventual transition that came sooner than expected. The domaine's name was subsequently changed to reflect this new chapter. Louis-Benjamin's sister, Charlotte Dagueneau, also joined the family business, contributing to vineyard management and winemaking operations. Under Louis-Benjamin's direction, the domaine has maintained its focus on producing terroir-expressive Sauvignon Blanc from the family's holdings in Pouilly-Fumé and neighboring appellations.
Vineyards & Wines
Domaine Louis-Benjamin Dagueneau encompasses approximately 12 hectares of vineyards spread across several sites in the Pouilly-Fumé appellation and a small parcel in Sancerre. The domaine's most notable vineyard sites include Silex, characterized by its flint-rich soils that impart distinctive mineral qualities to the wines; Pur Sang, situated on limestone and clay soils; and Buisson Renard, which features sandy, limestone-rich terrain. The vineyards are planted exclusively to Sauvignon Blanc, with vine age varying from 10 to over 50 years across different parcels. The domaine produces a range of single-vineyard bottlings that express their specific terroirs, including the flagship Silex, Pur Sang, Buisson Renard, and Blanc Fumé de Pouilly. Additionally, the domaine produces a small quantity of Jurançon through a separate project in southwest France, working with the local varieties Petit Manseng and Gros Manseng.
Philosophy & Practice
The domaine adheres to rigorous vineyard management practices established by Didier and continued by Louis-Benjamin, including severe pruning to restrict yields to approximately 35 hectoliters per hectare—significantly below regional averages. Vineyard work is labor-intensive, with a focus on maintaining healthy soils and vine balance. Harvest is conducted by hand, with multiple passes through the vineyards to ensure optimal ripeness. In the winery, the grapes undergo gentle pressing followed by fermentation in oak barrels of various sizes, including 225-liter barriques and larger 400-liter puncheons. The wines typically age on their lees for 12-18 months, depending on the cuvée and vintage conditions. Louis-Benjamin has maintained his father's commitment to minimal intervention in the cellar while implementing subtle refinements to the winemaking process. The domaine's approach combines traditional methods with modern precision, avoiding filtration when possible to preserve the wines' textural qualities and aging potential.
