Jean-Jacques Confuron, Domaine

Summary
Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron is a third-generation family estate operating from Premeaux-Prissey in the Côte de Nuits, with 8 hectares of vineyards producing primarily Pinot Noir from exceptional sites including Grand Cru Romanée-Saint-Vivant and various Premier Crus across limestone and clay soils. Their winemaking balances tradition with practical innovation, incorporating varying percentages of whole clusters during fermentation, extended barrel aging, and minimal intervention in the later stages to preserve each site's authentic expression.
Heritage & Leadership
Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron was established in the 1920s when Jean-Jacques Confuron and his wife Berthe Faiveley married and combined their family vineyards. Based in the small village of Premeaux-Prissey, just south of Nuits-Saint-Georges, the domaine represents a classic Burgundian family enterprise. Following Jean-Jacques' management, his son Louis Confuron took over operations alongside his wife Annick.
The current generation assumed control in 1988 when Alain Meunier and Sophie Confuron (daughter of Louis and Annick) took the reins of the family business. This husband-and-wife team has maintained the domaine's traditional approach while implementing subtle modernizations to enhance quality. Under their direction, the domaine has maintained its focus on expressing the distinctive terroirs of the Côte de Nuits.
Vineyards & Wines
Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron manages approximately 8 hectares of vineyards spread across several appellations in the Côte de Nuits. Their holdings include parcels in the Grand Cru Romanée-Saint-Vivant, as well as Premier Cru sites in Vosne-Romanée (Les Beaux Monts and Les Suchots), Chambolle-Musigny (Les Chabiots), and Nuits-Saint-Georges (Les Vignes Rondes and Aux Boudots).
The domaine's village-level holdings include plots in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanée, and Chambolle-Musigny. Their vineyards feature the region's characteristic limestone and clay soils, with variations in composition contributing to the distinctive character of each wine. The domaine focuses primarily on Pinot Noir, with small plantings of Aligoté and Chardonnay.
The vines are maintained at relatively low yields to ensure concentration and quality, with many parcels containing older vines that contribute depth and complexity to the finished wines.
Philosophy & Practice
The Confuron-Meunier approach balances respect for tradition with practical innovation. In the vineyards, they practice sustainable viticulture with meticulous attention to soil health and vine balance. Their viticultural work emphasizes manual labor, including hand harvesting and careful sorting to ensure only the highest quality fruit enters the winery.
In the cellar, Alain and Sophie employ traditional Burgundian winemaking techniques. Fermentations typically include varying percentages of whole clusters depending on the vintage and vineyard, a practice that can add structural complexity and aromatic nuance. New oak is used judiciously, with the percentage varying by appellation level—generally higher for Grand and Premier Cru wines and more modest for village-level bottlings.
The wines undergo extended aging in barrel, typically 18-24 months depending on the cuvée, followed by bottling without fining or filtration when possible. This minimal-intervention approach in the later stages of winemaking aims to preserve the authentic expression of each vineyard site, resulting in wines that reflect their specific terroir rather than winemaking technique.
