Franck Balthazar

Summary
Franck Balthazar operates a small 3.5-hectare estate in Cornas, focusing exclusively on Syrah from the granite-rich Chaillot and Mazards vineyards, where many vines date to the 1920s and 1930s. His traditional approach includes horse-plowing the vineyards, whole-cluster fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and aging in older demi-muids, preserving methods that have largely disappeared from modern Northern Rhône winemaking.
Heritage & Leadership
Domaine Franck Balthazar represents a continuation of Northern Rhône winemaking tradition that began in 1931, when Franck's grandfather, Casimir Balthazar, established vineyards in Cornas. The family estate remained under the stewardship of Franck's father, René Balthazar, until 2002, when Franck officially took the reins of the domaine. Prior to this transition, Franck worked in metallurgy, making a significant career change to preserve his family's viticultural heritage.
The domaine maintains a deliberately small scale, allowing Franck to personally oversee all aspects of production. Unlike many producers who expanded their holdings during the late 20th century, the Balthazar family maintained their focus on traditional Cornas vineyards, preserving old vines and traditional methods that have become increasingly rare in the region. Under Franck's leadership, the domaine has reinforced its commitment to traditional Cornas winemaking while gaining recognition for wines that express the distinctive terroir of this Northern Rhône appellation.
Vineyards & Wines
Domaine Franck Balthazar encompasses approximately 3.5 hectares of vineyards, all located within the Cornas appellation. The estate's holdings include parcels in two of Cornas' most distinguished sites: Chaillot and Mazards. The Chaillot vineyard sits on decomposed granite soils with southern exposure at elevations between 250-300 meters, providing optimal ripening conditions for Syrah. Many of the vines in this parcel date back to the 1920s and 1930s, planted by Franck's grandfather.
The domaine's production centers exclusively on Syrah, the traditional grape of the Northern Rhône. Balthazar produces several bottlings, with the primary cuvées being Cornas "Chaillot" from the vineyard of the same name, and Cornas "Mazards" from the Mazards lieu-dit. Additionally, the domaine produces a small quantity of Côtes du Rhône from younger vines. Annual production remains limited, with approximately 10,000 bottles produced across all cuvées, reflecting both the small size of the estate and the naturally low yields of the old vines.
Philosophy & Practice
Franck Balthazar adheres to traditional viticultural and winemaking methods that have largely disappeared from modern production. In the vineyards, he continues to plow with a horse rather than using tractors, a practice that minimizes soil compaction and allows for more precise work between the vine rows. The domaine practices organic viticulture, avoiding synthetic chemicals in favor of natural treatments and manual labor.
In the cellar, Balthazar employs whole-cluster fermentation for his Cornas wines, with stems included to provide structure and aging potential. Fermentations occur with indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks, followed by aging in older demi-muids (600-liter barrels) for approximately 18 months. New oak is deliberately avoided to preserve the pure expression of Syrah and the granite terroir. Balthazar employs minimal intervention throughout the winemaking process, with no fining or filtering before bottling.
This combination of traditional methods—horse plowing, whole-cluster fermentation, and aging in neutral vessels—reflects Balthazar's commitment to preserving the historical winemaking approach of Cornas while allowing each vineyard's character to be expressed with clarity and precision.
