Ferriere, Chateau

Summary
Château Ferrière is a Third Growth Margaux estate spanning 16 hectares of gravelly soils, where Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the plantings to produce elegant, aromatic wines with refined tannin structure. Owned by the Villars-Merlaut family since the 1990s and directed by Claire Villars-Lurton, the property distinguishes itself through certified biodynamic viticulture and minimal intervention winemaking practices.
Heritage & Leadership
Château Ferrière, classified as a Third Growth (Troisième Cru) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, traces its origins to the early 18th century when Gabriel Ferrière established the estate. The property represents one of the smallest classified growths in the Médoc, with just 8 hectares of vineyards. Since 1988, the Villars-Lurton family has owned and managed the estate, with Claire Villars-Lurton currently directing operations. Under her leadership, the château has undergone significant modernization while maintaining its historical character.
Vineyards & Wines
The Château Ferrière vineyard spans 8 hectares within the Margaux appellation, planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), complemented by Merlot (25%) and Cabernet Franc (5%). The vines, averaging 45 years in age, grow in classic Margaux gravel soils that provide excellent drainage and heat retention. This terroir composition particularly benefits the dominant Cabernet Sauvignon plantings, allowing for consistent ripening through the growing season.
Philosophy & Practice
Château Ferrière holds organic certification, achieved in 2013, and implements biodynamic farming practices throughout the estate. The winemaking process combines traditional methods with modern precision, utilizing temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for fermentation. The wine ages for 18 months in French oak barrels, with 40% new oak integrated annually. This measured approach to oak aging allows for subtle structural development while preserving the wine's inherent character.
