Comtes Lafon, Domaine des

Summary
Domaine des Comtes Lafon operates 14 hectares in Burgundy's Côte de Beaune, focusing on Chardonnay from limestone-rich Meursault premier cru vineyards including Perrières, Charmes, and Genevrières. Under fourth-generation owner Dominique Lafon, the biodynamic estate follows traditional Burgundian methods with indigenous yeast fermentation and extended lees aging of 18-22 months.
Heritage & Leadership
Domaine des Comtes de Lafon was established in 1861 when Joseph 'Jules' Lafon acquired his first vineyard parcels in Meursault. The domaine passed to René Lafon in the early 20th century, followed by René's son Jules in 1940. Dominique Lafon assumed control in 1984, marking the fourth generation of family leadership. Under Dominique's direction, the domaine converted to biodynamic viticulture, receiving certification in 1998.
Vineyards & Wines
The domaine manages vineyards across three communes: Meursault, Volnay, and Monthélie. The Meursault holdings include premier cru parcels in Perrières, Charmes, and Genevrières. The vineyards sit on limestone-rich soils at elevations between 230-360 meters. Chardonnay comprises 13 hectares of plantings, with the remaining hectare dedicated to Pinot Noir in Volnay. The domaine produces both white and red burgundies, with Meursault Premier Crus forming the core of production.
Philosophy & Practice
The domaine follows certified biodynamic practices across all vineyard sites. White wines ferment in French oak barrels, with new oak usage limited to 15-25% depending on the specific cru. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally, followed by aging on fine lees for 18-22 months. The winery employs minimal intervention during vinification, allowing indigenous yeasts to conduct fermentation. Harvesting is performed entirely by hand, with careful grape selection both in the vineyard and at the sorting table.
