Romanee-Conti

History and Background
Located in Vosne-Romanée, Burgundy, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti traces its origins to the 13th century, when the vineyard was owned by the Abbey of Saint Vivant (founded 1232). The Croonembourg family acquired and renamed it Romanée in 1631. In 1760, Prince Louis François de Bourbon-Conti purchased the vineyard, adding his name before it was later confiscated during the French Revolution. The modern era began in 1869 when Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet acquired and expanded the estate. In 1911, ownership was established between Edmond Gaudin de Villaine and the Leroy family. Today, the partnership continues between the de Villaine family, represented by Aubert de Villaine, and the Leroy family, with Lalou Bize-Leroy having been actively involved until 1992.
Vineyards and Terroir
The domaine's vineyards span the communes of Vosne-Romanée and Flagey-Echezeaux. The soils are predominantly limestone and marl, with significant variations even within small plots. This limestone-clay mix is crucial to the wines' character - the limestone provides minerality and finesse, while clay ensures optimal water retention for vine nourishment.
Six Pinot Noir vineyards: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Grands Echezeaux, and Echezeaux
One Chardonnay vineyard: Montrachet
Each vineyard produces distinctly individual wines that express their specific terroir. The Montrachet stands apart as the domaine's only white wine, known for its richness and aging potential.
Wine Style and Production
DRC's winemaking philosophy centers on minimal intervention, emphasizing that exceptional wines emerge from the relationship between terroir and precise vineyard management. The domaine practices biodynamic farming (since the 1980s) to maintain vineyard vitality.
Their wines are characterized by:
-Elegant structure and remarkable depth
-Complex aromatics and pronounced terroir expression
-Significant aging potential
-Limited production volumes
The winemaking approach prioritizes non-interventionist cellar practices, allowing each vineyard's character to be expressed purely in the finished wine.
