Alain Graillot

Summary
Domaine Alain Graillot is a family-operated Northern Rhône estate spanning 20 hectares in Crozes-Hermitage, primarily producing Syrah-based wines from alluvial soils where the Isère and Rhône rivers converge. Their traditional winemaking approach features whole-cluster fermentation in concrete tanks followed by aging in used Burgundian barrels, maintaining minimal intervention practices that showcase the pure expression of their terroir.
Heritage & Leadership
Alain Graillot established his eponymous domaine in 1985 in the Crozes-Hermitage appellation of France's Northern Rhône Valley. Prior to founding his winery, Graillot worked in the chemical industry, making a significant career change to pursue winemaking. The domaine began with vineyard parcels near the village of Pont de l'Isère, where the Isère River meets the Rhône.
The leadership of the domaine transitioned to Alain's son, Maxime Graillot, who gradually took over operations beginning in the mid-2000s. Maxime formally assumed control around 2008, while Alain remained involved in an advisory capacity. In March 2022, Alain Graillot passed away, leaving a significant legacy in the Northern Rhône. The domaine continues under Maxime's direction, maintaining the winemaking principles established by his father.
Vineyards & Wines
The Graillot domaine encompasses approximately 20 hectares of vineyards situated on the flat plains of Crozes-Hermitage, primarily near the confluence of the Isère and Rhône rivers. The vineyard soils consist mainly of alluvial deposits with a mix of gravel, clay, and sand—a composition that differs from the granite-based soils found on the hillsides of Hermitage across the river.
Syrah dominates the plantings, comprising approximately 18.5 hectares dedicated to red wine production. The remaining 1.5 hectares are planted with the white varieties Marsanne and Roussanne for the domaine's Crozes-Hermitage Blanc. The vineyards feature north-south row orientations to optimize sun exposure in this northern climate.
The domaine produces several wines, with their standard Crozes-Hermitage rouge serving as the flagship bottling. Additional offerings include a Crozes-Hermitage Blanc, a limited production Saint-Joseph from purchased fruit, and a special cuvée called "La Guiraude," which is a selection of the best barrels from each vintage.
Philosophy & Practice
The winemaking approach at Domaine Alain Graillot centers on traditional methods that highlight the pure expression of Syrah from the Northern Rhône. A distinctive feature of their production is the use of whole-cluster fermentation, where the entire grape bunches including stems are fermented together. This technique contributes structure, aromatic complexity, and a characteristic peppery note to the wines.
Fermentation takes place in concrete tanks, which provide temperature stability without imparting flavors to the wine. After fermentation, the wines are aged for approximately 12 months in used oak barrels, primarily sourced from Burgundy producers. This aging regimen allows for gentle oxidation and textural development while minimizing overt oak flavors.
The domaine practices sustainable viticulture with minimal intervention in the vineyards. Harvest is conducted manually to ensure only quality fruit enters the winery. In the cellar, intervention is kept to a minimum, with no fining and only light filtration before bottling. This approach results in wines that reflect both their terroir and vintage conditions, characterized by freshness, aromatic intensity, and structural integrity.
